In 1900 Gouzangrez counted 147 inhabitants. In the heart of the village were three cafe/corner stores: the cafe, shop and haberdashery “Le vrai picolo”, the cafe and shop “Marette”, which became a shop/movie theatre in 1960 and the “Mère Eblée” bistro on Grand Rue.
At the time, almost all the village's inhabitants worked at the distillery farm. The attendance records for the distillery farm workers, include notes such as “absent due to drink”. The few means of transport and shops in the area meant that cafes were social hubs.
Subsequent industrial and technological developments, including the arrival of cars, televisions and supermarkets, have reoriented community life away from the cafes.
These cafes have now been transformed into homes, but the “fête du pétillon” (juniper branch festival), the day of Saint John's bonfire, is still celebrated. Each year, a bouquet of juniper, decorated with paper is hung up by locals on the old cafés of Gouzangrez.
