Pieds nus sur les limaces (Lily sometimes)
Fabienne Berthaud, 2010
Vexin... in Provence
In September 2009, Fabienne Berthaud set up his cameras in Valmondois cemetery to shoot the scene of Mireille’s funeral (Anne Benoît), mother of Clara (Diane Kruger) and Lily (Ludivine Sagnier). Following the death of their mother the sisters, who are total opposites, get to know each other and Clara willingly gives up everything to look after Lily...
After shooting the sequence of the religious procession on the plateau, the whole team came to this site, which was supposed to be set in Provence. They filmed the burial with two cameras - one fixed, the second held on the shoulder – with no other lighting that natural light. All the exterior shots were done according to the sun’s trajectory, to create the kind of naturalistic effect used by John Cassavetes. Fabienne Berthaud won an award for the film at the Directors' Fortnight at the 2010 Cannes festival.
Other movies
The location of the cemetery at the top of the village, hidden behind dense foliage, explains its appeal to filmmakers. Besides Mireille’s funeral, it was also the final resting place of Max (Mathieu Demy) in "If You Love Me Follow Me" (Benoît Cohen, 2006) and Hélène (Edith Scob) in "Summer Hours" (Olivier Assayas, 2008). The latter film was also shot almost entirely in a private house in Butry-sur-Oise.
