The Riblet Cross
A monument dedicated to love at a crossroads?

Inscriptions make this cross unique...

This wooden cross was erected here sometime around 1740. The names Geneviève Leroy and François Riblet are inscribed on the stone pedestal. At the time, Geneviève Leroy was the wife of a miller, André Blaye. In 1742, at the age of 42, she married for a second time. François Riblet, her new husband, aged 27, was also a miller. They undoubtedly lived in the oldest mill in the village. It is likely that the stone was engraved in honour of their love. Some partially effaced inscriptions can still be seen on the pedestal.

...in comparison to the many other crosses in the village

In Jambville, many crosses marked out the routes for travellers coming from Meulan or Magny-en-Vexin. The 1780 land register shows three crosses on the Plaignes road. Two more crosses marked the way farther along, one between Montalet-le-Bois and Lainville, and the other on the Rue de Tilleuls, near the château.
